Keyword Research-Some Tips For Newbies: Part 1

Keywords. Those mystical, often confusing elements of marketing on the web. This is a very deep subject so I will provide you with bite size, easily digestible chunks of information. This will be a “running series” with a total of……? I don’t know as I am very spontaneous at times. I’ll tell you what, we will beat this drum into the future until we can’t beat it any more. I say this because keyword research is very critical to your level of success in the cyber rodeo. Yeehaa! Lets do this!

Keywords are simply the words or phrases entered into a search engine when someone is searching for something on the internet. When you write ads, articles or other forms of written communication the use of keywords is critical to you being found when people are searching for whatever it is that you have to offer.

Long Tail vs. Short Tail

On the surface this is fairly self explanatory but below that it is often misunderstood or wrongly perceived as  over simplified. Short Tail is a one, maybe  two word phrase related to a subject,  product, or service you are promoting . Long Tail is the same thing but typically three or more words in length. When doing keyword research you typically start with Short Tail and then progress toward the Long Tail as these will narrow your focus and allow you to target much more precisely the niche market you desire to promote to.

Example Ladder

Product: Exercises for the relief of  Back Pain.

Back Pain > Cures for Back Pain > Natural Cures For  Back Pain> Curing Back Pain Without Drugs

You get the picture. You need to zero in on a very focused, pin pointed area, The reason for this is that if you remain very broad and generalyzed your competition in that niche will be far to big. You must zero in on keywords that pertain to your subject, product or service but are noy overly popular to the point that you are lost in the sea of overly generic search terms.

Note: Go to Google AdWords and use their keyword research. By experimenting with this you will get a feel for what I have explained here.

There is a rhyme and Reason to how this all works in regards to search data translation and the ideal number ranges to look for. Knowing this will save you a lot of time and frustration. I will be covering some of this in Part 2.
